Author: Suzanne Collins
My Rating: 9/10 What I liked about this book…. is that it had lots of suspense and drama to keep you on the edge of your seat! It’s surely gonna keep you up all night thinking what will happen next. I described how the characters went through all the hardships and how horrible it was for the people of the Districts, to be forced every year to send a young one to the hunger games to fight. This book is for 6th graders only, because it has lots of violence in it, that's because it got a 9/10. Why I recommend this book.. Is because it is really interesting and a really great novel if you like suspenseful drama. This book is also only the first of 2 other amazing books, the Hunger games: Catching Fire, and MockingJay, The last book, that really contains awesome drama and suspenseful. What is the story all about? The story is about how this 16 year old girl named Katniss Everdeen’s sister prim gets nominated for one of the district’s kids to be sent to the horrible hunger games, where kids get sent to compete until one person is still alive. Katniss stands up and volunteers to take her place. She has a friend named gale, but katniss soon figures out that she will be going to the hunger games with Peeta Mellark, age sixteen, and works as a backer for the markets of District 12. It tells about how Peeta and Katniss develops a fake/real relationship and become good friends during the Hunger games, and how katniss and Peeta keep each other alive till the end…………. Title: Divergent My rating: 10 out of 10 Divergent is about a girl named Beatrice who gets to choose her path to life. She goes through many challenges to get up to where she is now. She has to make the choice on her own. The groups she can choose to join are Erudite, Abnegation, Dauntless, Candor, or Amity. This is a very hard choice to make because once she chooses what faction she wants to join, there is no turning back so Beatrice is feeling very pressured to make the best decision. Read this book to find out what faction she chooses and the challenges and good times that occur during the time. I liked how almost every sentence in Divergent had some kind of drama or suspense in it. I would recommend this book because most kids enjoy drama and suspense so I think kids will enjoy reading it. Book: The Fourteenth Goldfish
Author: Jennifer Holm Grades: 4-6 Rating: 4/5 stars Ellie, an eleven year old adjusting to life in middle school, gets the surprise of her life when her grandfather shows up on her doorstep transformed into a teenager. Her newly-young Grandpa Melvin is a famous scientist who has discovered how to reverse the aging process. He comes to live with his family, renewing tensions between him and Ellie’s mother who has disappointed him due to her love of theatre. Ellie and Melvin grow closer as they are forced to attend school together, and the plot moves quickly into a scheme to win back Melvin’s formula from a lab that has taken credit for it. Ellie’s developing relationship with her grandfather allows her to realize her natural curiosity and love of science, while Melvin learns through his family that science is not all there is to life. The book weaves in information about real-life figures from STEM fields, such as Marie Curie and Robert Oppenheimer, serving as a good introduction for students. For a book dealing with such weighty topics as life, death, and growing old, it is quite amusing and will entertain younger students, though those in upper elementary grades are more likely to appreciate the book’s humor. Jennifer Holm, author of the Baby Mouse series of graphic novels, lends warmth and wit to this story of a young girl discovering her passion for science. |
